Personality disorders are complex mental health conditions defined by long standing, inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviate from cultural expectations. These patterns often begin in adolescence or early adulthood and can cause significant distress or interfere with daily functioning, work, and relationships. While there is no single cause, personality disorders often develop from a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental influences.
There are ten recognized types of personality disorders, grouped into three clusters:
- Cluster A: Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders
- Cluster B: Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Histrionic Personality Disorder
- Cluster C: Avoidant Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
Other and unspecified types can include depressive cyclothymic, passiveaggressive, masochistic, sadistic, and psychopathic personality patterns.
